Yeah, we all know about the Vikings here, but since the Indians were here for tens of thousands of years before them, we're not all that impressed.
The Indians came here from somewhere in Asia (there is some recent controversy about this I think), so the Vikings were a seriously distant second, compared to the Indians.
The Columbus trip was better documented, which probably has a lot to do with all this;
If you're going to do something "historic", make sure you get lots of press, otherwise people forget about it.
